THE new Miss World Philippines pageant headed by wellness guru Cory Quirino kicked off with a grand launch at the SMDC Grand Showroom at the Mall of Asia complex last March 23. Cory was awarded the Miss World franchise last January 25 by no less than Miss World president Julia Morley, who came to Manila along with the reigning Miss World beauty queens.

As chair and CEO of CQ Global Quest, Cory Quirino said the new pageant organization has adopted the slogan "Beauty in Giving" in line with Miss World’s "Beauty for a Purpose" inspiration that has raised more than $400 million to support countless charities. CQGQ’s charity gala night has chosen the PGH Medical Foundation and Tuloy Street Children Foundation as Miss World Philippines’ major beneficiaries.

The well-attended grand launch also formally announced the grand alliances of the pageant – major presenter SM Development Corporation (SMDC), with its vice chairman Henry Sy, Jr. in attendance; TV partner GMA-7 represented by senior vice president for entertainment Wilma Galvante; bank partner Banco de Oro; mall partner SM Supermalls; and official residence Traders Hotel Manila. Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn was also present, the "city in a forest" and its famous Underground River being the official tourist destination of the pageant.

The Miss World crown is dubbed as the "most coveted beauty crown in the world" with over a hundred contestants from as many countries and territories vying every year. For Filipinas, it has also been the most elusive; Vangie Pascual and Ruffa Gutierrez managed to snag runner-up honors in 1973 and 1993, respectively. Cory has expressed her hope of finally selecting the first Filipina who could win the Miss World crown. The pageant’s interactive official website www.missworldphilippines.com is now open for applicants. Deadline for submission of application is on June 15, 2011. A cool one million pesos and a condo unit from SMDC await the winner who will be crowned in a grand finals night at the PICC on July 30, 2011. 

Julia Morley will be in Manila to chair the panel of judges; the winner will represent the Philippines at the 2011 Miss World Pageant to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA on December 3. Cory also expressed her plan for the Philippines to bid to host the 62nd Miss World Pageant in 2013.

The 11th advocacy-driven Miss Philippines-Earth beauty pageant has kicked off, aligning itself with the "International Year of the Forests" as it centers this year’s competition with the promotion of forests conservation. 

Last March 22, the current Miss Philippines Earth winners and the (initial) candidates this year took over Manila as they invaded the stage in a fashion show cum preliminary judging at Robinsons Place Ermita, strutting environmental wear. The official delegates representing the country’s various cities and municipalities wowed the audience in their own interpretation of the Amazon look as they battled in creativity and showmanship. It was an afternoon full of beauty, feistiness, and fiery passion. 

Catch the beautiful ladies at the remaining Robinsons Mall Tours on the following dates: April 8 - Robinsons Novaliches, April 15 -Robinsons Sta. Rosa Market, and May 13 - Robinsons Metro East. Twelve candidates who will emerge victorious in the preliminaries will compete on the finals on May 27, 2011 at Robinsons Galleria.
